Installing East Asian Language Support Under Windows XP

This page outlines the steps for installing East Asian languages on a computer running Windows XP so that the user can both read and write in them. For Windows 2000 Professional and Windows Vista, please see the page on how to enable East Asian languages on Windows 2000 Professional and Windows Vista respectively, since the steps are somewhat different. Windows 95/98/Me/NT4 users have to download Asian language support and input editor files from Microsoft's Web site.

  1. First open the Control Panel dialog box by clicking on the Start button, and then click on Control Panel. By default the Control Panel is in the new Category View. If that is the case, click on Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options under Pick a Category. If not, you can either click on Switch to Category View to bring it up, or work in the Classic View (in that case just double click on the Regional and Language Options icon to open the Regional and Language Options dialog box; go on to section (3)).

  2. The Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options opens. Click on Regional and Language Options under or Pick a Panel Control icon.

  3. You get the Regional and Language Options dialog box. Click on the Languages tab.

  4. You are now under the Languages tab for the Regional and Language Options dialog box.

Check the box for Install East Asian Languages under Supplemental language support. Then click Apply and OK.

  5. Once the language files have been installed, click on the Details ... button under Text services and input languages while you are still under the Languages tab for the Regional and Language Options dialog box. You get the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box.

Then click on the Add.. button under Installed services.

  6. The next 3 sections explain how to install Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0 for simplified Chinese. (A number of other input methods for Chinese are available.) For installing Microsoft New Phonetic IME 2002a for traditional Chinese, skip to section (11). For installing Japanese MS-IME Standard 2002 (which allows the writing of kana and kanji by romaji input), skip to section (14). I have not provided an example for installing Korean language input, but the steps should be similar to those for installing Japanese and Chinese.

  7. After you have clicked the Add .. button under Installed services in the Input Locales tab while you are in the Text services and input languages dialog box as outlined in section (5), you get the Add Input Language dialogue box. Choose Chinese (PRC) from the drop-down list under Input Language, check the Keyboard Layout / IME button, and then pick Chinese (Simplified) - Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0. Then click OK.

  8. You are now back to the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box. Note that under Chinese (PRC) /Keyboard, Chinese (Simplified) - Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0 is now listed. Click Apply and then OK.

  9. After you have installed Chinese (Simplified) - Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0, you may want to fine tune its properties. To do this, first select Chinese (Simplified) - Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0 under Installed services in the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box by clicking on and highlighting it. Then click on Properties to bring up the Properties dialog box for Microsoft Pinyin 3.0.

Experienced users will want to pick and choose their options. For new users, it is strongly recommended that the default options be left in place.

  10. Microsoft Pinyin 3.0 allows toggling between traditional and simplified Chinese input, and so if you want to be able to write both traditional and simplified characters and you are comfortable with Pinyin romanization, you may not need to install a traditional Chinese input option additionally. (Skip this section if you don't want or need to enable toggling between simplified and traditional characters.)

After you finished installing Chinese (Simplified) - Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0, you should see a floating language bar near the top of the screen.

If instead of the floating language bar, you see a language button on the taskbar on the bottom of the screen, click on the button to bring up a list of languages installed, and then click on Show the Language bar to bring it up.

Once the language bar is up, click on it to bring up a list of languages installed, and select Simplified Chinese (PRC) by clicking on it. The Chinese lanuage bar comes up.

By default the toggle button for switching between simplified and traditional does not appear on the language bar for Simplified Chinese in Windows XP (unlike the menu bar for MS-Pinyin98 under Windows 2000 Professional). To enable it, click on the select button (the bottom part of at the right side of the language bar) for additional user selectable settings.

Move the mouse to the option Charset to highlight it, and then click to select it. Now the option menu contains a button for toggling between simplified and traditional characters.

  11. This and the following 3 sections explain how to install Microsoft New Phonetic IME 2002a for traditional Chinese. After you have clicked on the Add .. button under Installed services in the Input Locales tab while you are in the Text services and input languages dialog box as outlined in section (5), you get the Add Input Language dialogue box. Choose Chinese (Taiwan) from the drop-down list under Input Language, check the Keyboard Layout / IME button, and then pick Microsoft New Phonetic IME 2002a. Then click OK.

  12. You are now back to the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box. Note that under Chinese (Taiwan) /Keyboard, Microsoft New Phonetic IME 2002a is now listed. Click Apply and then OK.

  13. After you have installed Chinese (Taiwan) /Keyboard, Microsoft New Phonetic IME 2002a, you may want to fine tune its properties. To do this, first select Chinese (Taiwan) /Keyboard, Microsoft New Phonetic IME 2002a under Installed services in the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box by clicking on and highlighting it. Then click on Properties to bring up the Properties dialog box for Microsoft New Phonetic IME 2002a.

Experienced users will want to pick and choose their options. For new users, it is strongly recommended that the default options be left in place.

  14. In my case because I am familiar with Pinyin romanization but not with other Chinese language input methods, I clicked the radio button for Legacy IME under the Settings tab of the Properties dialog box for Microsoft New Phonetic IME 2002a, and the HanYu Pinyin radio button under the Keyboard Mapping tab.

  15. This and the following 2 sections explain how to install Japanese MS-IME Standard 2002. After you have clicked the Add .. button under Installed services in the Input Locales tab while you are in the Text services and input languages dialog box as outlined in section (5), you get the Add Input Language dialogue box. Choose Japanese from the drop-down list under Input Language, check the Keyboard Layout / IME button, and then pick Microsoft IME Standard 2002 ver 8.1. Then click OK.

  16. You are now back to the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box. Note that under Japanese /Keyboard, Microsoft IME Standard 2002 ver 8.1 is now listed. Click Apply and then OK.

  17. After you have installed Microsoft IME Standard 2002 ver 8.1 for Japanese, you may want to fine tune its properties. To do this, first select Microsoft IME Standard 2002 ver 8.1 under Installed services in the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box by clicking on and highlighting it. Then click on Properties to bring up the Properties dialog box for Microsoft IME Standard 2002.

Experienced users will want to pick and choose their options. For new users, it is strongly recommended that the default options be left in place.

There appears to be a bug in the English Windows version of Microsoft IME Standard 2002. Even though Hiragana is selected as the Default input mode, the IME always starts in Direct input mode. You have to manually change to Hiragana mode.

  18. Voilà! You are now ready to both read and write Chinese and/or Japanese in your documents. You will see near the upper right hand corner of the Windows desktop the Language bar button , which allows users to change the input language in an application by left clicking on it to bring up the language choices available and then selecting and clicking the desired language. Note that within the same document you can change the input language by using the Language bar. You can produce a document with a mixture of different languages.

  19. New users may want to take a look at the pages for writing Chinese and Japanese to get started quickly with working with Chinese and/or Japanese in their documents. Please see also the overview on reading and writing e-mail in Chinese and Japanese.

Add Keyboard/Input Method Editor

Once done, click OK to exit. On the Text Services and Input Languages page, click OK again to close Regional Options.

1.

1. Follow steps 1 - 5 from "Add Language Support" above.

2.

2. Under "Text services and input languages," click on the "Details..." button.

3.

3. Under Installed Services, click "Add..."

4.

4. In the Add Input Language dialog box, click the input language and keyboard layout or Input Method Editor (IME) you want to add.

6.

5. You should now see a language indicator in the System Tray (located at bottom right hand corner of the desktop by default)

NOTE: You can switch between different input methods by pressing the left Alt + Shift keys or the right Alt + Shift keys

Changing Language for non-Unicode Programs

Also known as "System Locale" in Windows 2000. This setting enables programs that do not support Unicode to display menus and dialog boxes in their native language by installing the necessary code pages and fonts. However, programs designed for other languages may not display text correctly.

NOTES:

To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority. If the computer is joined to a domain, members of the Domain Admins group might be able to perform this procedure.

1.

Follow steps 1 - 4 from "Add Language Support" above.

2.

Click on the "Advanced" tab

3.

Under "Language for non-Unicode program," select the language version of non-Unicode programs that will be used.

4.

Click OK

5.

Follow the on-screen instructions. You will be prompted to reboot the system. Click Yes to complete the change.

Page Degrag : Download

PageDefrag is a program, developed by Sysinternals (now distributed by Microsoft), for Microsoft Windows that runs at start-up to defrag the virtual memory page file and the Registry files.

If these files are defragmented, this may improve performance. Since PageDefrag only affects a small number of files, it takes a relatively short time to run when compared to entire-disk defragmenters like Windows Defrag, so long as the page file is not fragmented. If the page file is fragmented, PageDefrag can take as long as Windows Defrag, or even longer.

PageDefrag does not defragment the contents of the Registry files, only the placement of these files on the hard drive. Numerous other utilities like NTREGOPT examine the contents of the Registry to optimise it.

PageDefrag runs on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. The tool is not officially supported under Windows Vista or Server 2008 and cannot defragment the pagefile on these platforms, however it is able to defragment Registry hives as with earlier versions of Windows.

It was formerly a Microsoft product[1], but it is no longer available from the company's website. But You may find it from here BOOTVIS [Download Link]

Microsoft's design goals for Windows XP on a typical consumer PC are:

  • Boot to a usable state within a total of 30 seconds
  • Resume from Hibernate (S4) within a total of 20 seconds
  • Resume from Standby (S3) within a total of 5 seconds

Microsoft states: "Bootvis.exe is a performance tracing and visualization tool that Microsoft designed to help PC system designers and software developers identify performance issues for boot/resume timing while developing new PC products or supporting software.

Please note that Bootvis.exe is not a tool that will improve boot/resume performance for end users. Contrary to some published reports, Bootvis.exe cannot reduce or alter a system's boot or resume performance. The boot optimization routines invoked by Bootvis.exe are built into Windows XP and only XP. It will NOT work on other OS's. These routines run automatically at pre-determined times as part of the normal operation of the operating system."[1]

Web Patches - faster loading of Web Pages

The following patch increases Web page loading speed, by doubling the number of possible concurrent open connections. For example, imagine a web page has 20 images and some text - in order for your browser to get all these files, it opens 2 or 4 concurrent connections, depending on the Web server. Increasing the number of open connections allows for faster retrieving of the data. Please note that the patch sets some values outside of the HTML specs. If you decide to install it, backup your Registry first. Changes will take effect after you reboot. Download the patch appropriate for your OS.

Finding missing websites (ERROR 404).

You may go to a web site or click a link to a site that does not exist and you’ll probably get an error message saying, "Error 404, Object Not Found." If you do, there is a little trick you can do to help locate the missing file. Let’s pretend you attempted to go to http://www.website.com/page/missing/web.html. If you receive an error message saying it cannot find that web site, try going back to the root of the website to try and locate the site that you are looking for. For example, attempt to go to http://www.website.com/page/missing. You may be able to find a link for your page from there. And if that doesn’t work, try going to http://www.website.com/page, and then just http://www.website.com. You should have a good chance of locating the site you are looking for from one of those sites if it has been moved or renamed. However, if it has been deleted you are out of luck.

Mobile Battery Tips

If your mobile battery is troubling you in between your work and you feel like throwing away your set, then try these tips , they might be useful .

Reserve battery: Nokia instrument comes with a reserve battery. To activate, press the keys *3370# Your cell will restart withthis reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery.Thisreserve will get charged when you charge your cell next time.

Turn Down Screen Brightness: The screen is one of the most power-consuming parts of the mobile phone. The lower the brightness, the lesser power it needs. Keep it as low as you can, so long as you can still see it! Also, some phones like the E61 and the BlackBerry Pearl come with auto-adjust features that increase the brightness in brightly lit areas and dim it in low-light areas. If you're setting the brightness low, make sure that auto-adjust is turned off.

Don't Use Animated Wallpapers or Screensavers: The animations in wallpapers and screensavers can drain a bit of battery as they also consume a wee bit of CPU. Turn them off.

Turn Off Keypad Lights: If you've been using the phone for a while, you may be able to use the keys without seeing them. If this is the case, the keypad backlight can be turned off. However, not a lot of phones support this, but it's worth considering if your phone does.

Decrease Screen Standby Time Out: The time till your screen dims out and/or gets turned off is configurable in most phones. 10 seconds is good, 5 seconds is better. Set it as low as you can go without it becoming inconvenient.

Close Background Applications: If you're using a Smartphone, close applications that you don't need. Applications that stay active in the background use up a bit of CPU, which uses up battery. Make sure you 'exit' the applications from the menu, not by pressing the 'End' key, as that merely puts the application in the background. In Series 60 Smartphones (mostly Nokias), hold down the 'Menu' key to get a list of all applications running in the background to close them. In Windows Mobile 5 phones, open the 'Memory' application and check the 'Running programs' tab to close them.

Turn Off Vibration: Probably the second most power-consuming feature of any mobile phone is the built-in vibration alert. See if you can do without it.

Turn Down Ringer Volume, Keypad Tones and Speaker During Calls: If you're mostly indoors, like in the office or at home, a low ringer volume can go a bit towards saving your battery. Most phones also have DTMF-like keypad tones, which are not necessary if the keypad has decent tactile feedback. I keep them turned off most of the time — you can try it too. Volume of the earpiece when you're on a call can also be lowered, and that helps too.

Disable Voice Clarity / EFR / Voice Privacy: Almost all phones now do Enhanced Full Rate (EFR) for voice communication that consumes a little more power. In most cases, the enhanced quality of EFR doesn't make a difference thanks to the high noise levels in our city. Keep it off, you probably won't miss it. Some phones (mostly Samsungs) have a 'voice privacy' feature which can also be turned off to save battery.

Turn off 3G / GPRS / EDGEMost 3G/UMTS/WCDM: A phones keep searching for 3G coverage by default. In India, they'll keep searching till 2008, draining your battery, so go to the network selection screen and choose GSM-only. If your phone has a secondary camera near the screen, it's a 3G phone. Check your phone’s specs on the website if you aren't sure. Sometimes, even regular GPRS or EDGE connections stay active in the back, so make sure you specifically disconnect when you're done browsing the web.

Use Bluetooth and WiFi Only While Transferring: If you only use Bluetooth occasionally to transfer files to and from other devices, there's probably no point keeping it on all the time. Most phones only come with an on/off setting for Bluetooth, unlike the 'Turn on for 10 minutes' setting available for Infrared in some phones (mostly Sony Ericssons). People tend to forget about Bluetooth being left on after transferring the file — avoid doing this. Same goes for WiFi, if you're phone has that.

Here's another tip — find a USB cable if your phone supports recharging via USB: The Motorola RAZR/KRZR/SLVRs and most Windows Mobile Smartphones have a standard miniUSB slot that can use the same cable as most digital cameras. You're more likely to find one of these lying around somewhere than a charger for your phone, unless it's a Nokia, of course.

Finally, if you've tried everything else above then the only remedy will be don't use the phone too much.

Nokia Secret Codes/Hacks

These codes for the Nokia series of phones provide some interesting information for users, they also unlock some hidden functions. These codes are often reffered to as "Nokia Secret Codes" or "Nokia Hacks". Use the codes at your own risk, not all Nokia phones support all codes, I have tried to split them into these groups.

These 3 codes work on 90% of Nokia phones;

*#06# n/a Display the IMEI (Standard GSM command, works on all phones)
*#0000# n/a Display the firmware version and date
*#92702689# *#war0anty# Here you can view the S/N and the IMEI as well as the life timer (newer models). The date the phone left the factory and the date it was purchased. If your phone has been repaired the date of the repair is also visible. You will need to turn the phone off to exit this menu. Newer phones simply require you to press ok.

The following codes are specific to older series 40 phones; (Entering the following codes will restart the phone)

*4720# (*hra0#) Cctivates Half Rate, Half Rate is 5.6kbit/s and uses half the bandwidth at the cost of call quality. Network operators often activate half rate on overloaded towers during peak times to save costs.
#4720# (#hra0#) Deactivates Half Rate
*3370# (*efr0#) Activates Enhanced Full Rate, EFT attempts to match wire quality. The calls are 12.2kbit/s and are not supported by all operators. It is compatibale with the hightest AMR mode.
#3370# (#efr0#) Deactivates Enhanced Full Rate
*#746085685# (*#sim0clock#) Display the SIM clock status

The following codes are phone specific or phase related;

*#7220# (*#pca0#) Activate the GPRS PCCCH support (Packet Common Control Channel)
*#7230# (*#pcd0#) Deactivate the GPRS PCCCH support
*#7760# (*#ssn0#) Display the manufacturing serial number

This only works on the 3310 and 3330;

*#67705646# (*#opr0logo#) Clear the operator logo, the logo will be reset to the default network operator logo.

The following codes work on newer series 40 & series 60/80 phones;
